Essential Tools for Pouring a Concrete Worktop
There are several key tools used when pouring and finishing a concrete worktop. Understanding what each tool does and when to use it is critical to achieving a clean, consistent result.
Magnesium Float
The magnesium float is the primary finishing tool used shortly after the pour, typically 30 to 60 minutes in.
Its purpose is to:

Draw the cream to the surface for final finishing
You should begin floating once the concrete loses its wet shine and starts to look dull. If the surface dulls again but is still too soft for trowelling, it is fine to float a second time.
Steel Finishing Trowel
The steel trowel is the final finishing tool used before the concrete fully hardens.
It is used to:

Achieve a smooth finished appearance
Only use the steel trowel once the concrete is dull, dry, and firm. Press your finger lightly into the surface. If it leaves no imprint, the concrete is ready.

Concrete worktops should be sanded before sealing to remove minor imperfections and prepare the surface.

Higher polishing levels can be achieved later if required, but overly smooth surfaces may prevent stains and sealers from bonding correctly.
