How To Form an Overhang for your Concrete Countertop

You can safely create an overhang of up to 305 mm without any extra reinforcement. To do this, let your cement board extend past the cabinets. The standard form adds an additional 38 mm of overhang, so your backer board should cantilever 267 mm beyond the cabinet line.

The cement board must be temporarily supported so it does not flex or crack under the weight of the wet concrete. This is usually done using simple timber legs made from standard 38 mm by 89 mm timber.

Cut each leg around 6 mm shorter than required and use wooden shims to fine tune the final height. This makes adjustment easier and also helps when removing the legs later.

Leave the support legs in place for 2 to 3 days while the concrete cures. Once removed, the cement board remains permanently in place. The drop edge of the forms will fully conceal it.
